Chronic Modern….
For more than twenty years now – after postmodernism – the theoretical and artistic examination of modernity has remained a permanent theme. Especially for a younger generation of artists, the stylistic repertoire of classical modernist art since the turn of the millennium has returned to “fashion”,”chronically in fashion”, one might add.
Wasn’t it all said at the end of the 20th century? Sampling, post-pop, genre fusions: nothing more than “history repeating”? Or is there more? Modernity as a malleable mass and idea, from which any future can be drawn?
The essay by Sabine Maria Schmidt uses theories and artistic examples to introduce the diversity and versatility of the term “modernity”. Whether as a concept of style and epoch in art history, in contemporary modernism in international architecture or with regard to the revision of modernity in museums: the renewed “reload” of modernity poses many questions.

Seit über zwanzig Jahren – nach der Postmoderne – ist die theoretische und künstlerische Auseinandersetzung mit der Moderne ein Dauerthema geblieben. Vor allem bei einer jüngeren Künstlergeneration kam das Stilrepertoire der Kunst der klassischen Moderne seit der Jahrtausendwende wieder groß in „Mode“, “chronisch in Mode”, möchte man hinzufügen.
War nicht am Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts schon alles gesagt? Sampling, Post-Pop, Gattungsfusionen: nichts weiter als „History Repeating“? Oder ist da doch noch mehr? Die Moderne als formbare Masse und Idee, aus welcher auch zukünftig beliebig geschöpft werden kann?
